Keeping your children healthy….

The school nurses at WMMHS are Linda Esposito and Jessica Ewer.  Both of us are New Jersey State Certified School Nurses.

Visits to the Health Office

The Health Office is open during school hours.  We  provide first aid, assessment of illness, emergency care, pre-physicals, information, and maintenance of health records.  All doctors notes and gym excuses should be brought to one of the nurses in our office.  All students are welcome in our office, and we will do our best to address their needs.  In the event that your child needs to be sent home sick, we will contact you in order to make arrangements for your child.

The Health Office at West Morris Mendham

Our goal for keeping our students healthy:

The School Nurses at WMMHS aspire to keep our students healthy physically, emotionally, and academically.  We aim to do this through providing first aid, assessment of illnesses, screenings, medication administration, and acting as a resource for you and your child.  We are available in the health office during school hours for your child’s needs.   We want to see our students achieve, and a healthy student has a strong foundation for academic achievement.  Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions or concerns.

Screenings

Part of what we do in the Health Office is required by the NJ State Health Services Guidelines.  We are mandated to do vision and hearing screenings in the 10th grade.  Scoliosis screening is done in 9th and 11th grade.  You may exempt your child from scoliosis screening by contacting us in writing.  We also monitor heights, weights, and blood pressure on students through  physicals for sports, camp, and working papers.

Medication at School

Medication administration at school is done for both prescription and over-the-counter medication.  If your child requires any type of medication at school, we must have doctor and parent permission.  Your student cannot carry their own medication at school.  The only exceptions are EPIPENs and inhalers.  If your child requires either one, he/she may carry and self-administer those medications.  The documentation forms for OTC medication in school can be obtained from the health office and on the school’s website.  The forms for prescription and self-administration can be obtained in the office.

Sports Physicals

Sports physicals are an important part of what we do in the Health Office.  There are specific NJ State Sports Physical forms that your student will need in order to participate in an interscholastic sport.  These forms can be obtained in the health office or on the WMMHS website.  Physicals can be performed by your private physician or the school doctor.  If your private physician does the physical, it will also need to be reviewed by our school doctor.  All deadlines are necessary in order for your child to safely participate in a high school sport.  Please be aware that deadlines for sports forms precede the start of each sport season by at least two weeks.  Please contact us with any questions.

Health Records and Immunizations

We keep permanent health records on all students, including their immunizations.  If you need a copy of your child’s immunization record while they are currently a student at WMMHS, please contact us and we will make a copy for you.  If you or your child has graduated, please contact the guidance office for a copy.

WELCOME TO THE HEALTH OFFICE!

Special Considerations

We realize that adolescence can be a very difficult time.  Students are faced with many issues, including drugs, alcohol, sexuality, eating disorders, depression, anxiety and many other health concerns.  We are constantly seeking the most up-to-date information for you and your child.  There may be times when one of the nurses contacts you if we or another staff member has a concern about your child.  Please remember that we attempting to meet your child’s needs to the best of our ability.
