GRADING POLICY Grading in Orchestra (Academic Level): Grading in Orchestra (Advanced Level): 40% Tests 25% Differentiated proficiencies 25% Lesson Grade 75% Academic Level Requirements 15% Class Grade 20% Concert Grade
Tests - 40% Playing tests are given weekly. Assigned sections of music are performed by section for most tests, while other tests are given privately for Mrs. Meiseles. Written tests will be given during the school year. Students who are absent on the day of a test are required to make up the grade before the end of the marking period. Failure to do this results in a -0- for the missing grade. Students may retake any section test once and will receive the higher of the two grades earned.
Lesson Grade - 25% Lessons are evaluated by both quality and quantity. Attendance at a minimum of 5 lessons per marking period is required.
Students are required to take five lessons per marking period. For every two lessons which exceed the required five lessons, the student receives extra credit on their marking period average. Music lessons are given during students’ Study Hall, IRT, Physical Education period, Lunch periods and after school. Mrs. Meiseles sets up the lesson schedule based on your child’s schedule and her availability.
Students who study privately may have their private lessons count toward the lesson part of their grade. After obtaining approval from both the private teacher and the orchestra director, students will use the standard lesson sheet for the reporting of lesson attendance and preparation. This form must be returned to Mrs. Meiseles by the end of each marking period. In addition, Private lesson students MUST take 2 (TWO) lessons with Mrs. Meiseles each marking period. If for some reason you are unable to take a lesson at your scheduled time, you must notify your instructor ahead of time. You may reschedule a lesson if the instructor can fit you into his/her schedule.
Class Grade - 15% You will be assigned a grade each week based upon your work in class. These grades will be based upon your knowledge of all parts assigned to you in the performing group as perceived through class participation, observation of rules in the rehearsal, attitude, effort and preparedness.
Concert Grade - 20% This grade will evaluate your performance, punctuality and professionalism at the concert. If a student does not attend the concert for any reason, they will be assigned a 5-page written assignment (topic determined by the director) to make up the grade.
FINAL EXAM - A Final Exam will be given during a regularly-scheduled Orchestra class. This written exam will include scale key signatures, rhythmic notation and musical terminology used throughout the year in our orchestra repertoire.
