This class is a mastery class, not an introductory course. You will be expected to master the material presented. Mastery constitutes getting at least 90% of the material correct. Your report card will indicate only Pass (90%) or Fail (<90%).

Any worksheet or class work on which you received less than 90% must be redone. We will go over the answers, you may ask questions to clarify your understanding, and then trade me your old worksheet for a new one. The only grade that will count is your last one (plus an extra point for extending the effort to do it over).

                      Example:  1st grade is 8 out of 10             = 80%

                                       Redo is 10 (+ 1) out of 10       = 110%

                                       Only grade recorded               = 110%

Many writing assignments will be assigned points, and you will receive the points based good effort, or the things you have done right, not on being error free. Editing your work will earn additional points.

Vocabulary tests will be given. These will always be announced ahead of time. Your notebook will serve as your word bank. You must study carefully for these because they cannot be redone, and can seriously hurt you average.

Please understand that the choice is clearly yours. The grading system is designed so that you can dare to think for yourself and take chances. Do NOT GUESS. DO NOT SETTLE FOR GOOD ENOUGH. Often, you will correct your own work. Don’t cheat yourself. What you want to know is WHY something is right. If you don’t know the WHY behind each thing you do, it’s just a lucky guess that will not help you on the HSPA or the SATs.
