About Myself:  I have been teaching at Mendham High School since  February of 2002.  I am also a graduate of the High School.  I attended the College of St. Elizabeth where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary/Early Childhood Education and Psychology, with a concentration in Special Education (K-12).  I recently earned my Masters of Arts in Education, with a concentration in Special Education also from the College of St. Elizabeth.  I also received a certification in Assistive Technology.  My teaching responsibilities include all of the Life Skills courses (The program is designed to develop those skills and competencies that are critical to successful independent functioning in the home, school, and in the work setting.  The overall goal is to promote independence in the adult community.)  Communication Skills, Independence in the Community, Survival Math, Personal Responsibility and Social Awareness, and  Transitions: School to Work.  In addition:  I am the advisor of Friends and Buddies and the Structured Learning Experience Coordinator.

 

Communication Skills:  This course will provide students with the opportunity to practice oral reading and writing skills in the context of real life experiences at home, at school or in the community.  Students will acquire essential oral expression and functional reading and writing skills.

 

Independence in the Community:  This course is an integrated program of social studies, science and health related concepts.  Students will participate in a variety of community-based experiences to generalize life skills.

 

Survival Math:  This course is specifically designed to meet the unique and practical needs of students.  Students will acquire, remediate and master computational concepts as well as concepts of time, money within the context of their daily needs at home, in the school and in the community.

 

Personal Responsibility and Social Awareness:  This course is designed to broaden student awareness in the area of humanities and leisure time activities.  It also provides instruction for important adult issues such as family life, social behaviors and personal relationships.

 

Transitions:  School to Work:  This course provides students with opportunities to discover attitudes and aptitudes that lead to success in employment situations.  Students will be provided with learning as well as practical experiences which will assist them in building necessary pre-employment and employment skills.  The goal for the student’s final year is to have him/her working half days while attending classes half days.

 

Friends and Buddies:  Friends and Buddies is a club that establishes one-to-one friendships between students in all grade levels and various abilities.  The focus of this club involves peer tutoring, social games and events.  Attending after school functions with other members is also encouraged.  Friends and Buddies meets twice a month during lunch.  Students are also invited to room 220 during their study hall (per. 1, 2, 3 & 4), to participate in peer tutoring and discussion.  Some social events include a Halloween Party and Holiday Party.

 

Structured Leaning Experiences:  Interested 11th and 12th grade students will voluntarily select a (SLE) to complement their classroom instruction or future job goals.  The experience may be paid or unpaid, and can include the following options:  apprenticeships, community service, internships, job shadowing, school-based experiences,  and work experience / career exploration.  All (SLE) activities shall adhere to state and federal child labor laws and other regulations of Federal and State Departments of Education and Labor.
