The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the basic accounting cycle using traditional methods, a computerized accounting system, and a spreadsheet application (Excel 2003).  Students will connect accounting to the real world of business and their personal lives.  Procedures for a sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation will be introduced.  Careers in accounting will be explored and ethics in the field of accounting will be examined using recent court cases.

This advanced course will provide students with a culminating experience integrating the information provided by other business department offerings.  Current business topics will be included and a well organized business portfolio will be maintained.  Business careers will be explored and students will prepare for FBLA competitions and meetings.  A capstone experience for this course will be the development and organization of a small business through the use of a business plan.

This course is designed for students who want to know how to use the computer as a word processing tool.  Instruction will focus on touch typing using efficient keyboarding techniques and the computer skills needed to prepare typical personal and business documents using word processing software.  (1 semester only)

All students need to understand the basics of personal finance and be prepared to make informed financial decisions.  Students will learn how to budget, maintain a checking/savings account, invest in the stock market, apply for a loan, rent/buy a home or apartment, understand and purchase insurance, plan for retirement, and analyze a paycheck.  Other topics include:  banking services, owning and operating a car, consumer protection and fraud, wise use of credit, and relevant laws.
